The human areola (areola mammae) is the pigmented area on the breast around the nipple. Areola, more typically, is a little circular location on the body with a different histology from the surrounding tissue, or other small circular areas such as an irritated area of skin. The fully grown human female nipple has a number of little openings organized radially around the pointer of the nipple (lactiferous ducts) from which milk is released throughout lactation.
